A little known gem in East Devon on the coast, this Victorian church was built by a major Victorian architect and boy does it show. It is very good indeed.
The outside is subdued Early English with glorious use of various stones and very special touches like the west door
Inside everything is carefully detailed, from the nave pillars with smaller shafts of Devon marble to the chancel only having a clerestory, attracting the eye towards the altar.
The pulpit is an entrancing little play in golden brasswork, with extra fishes, and the alabaster font is very good indeed.
Around the chancel walls, about halfway up, is a mosaic and opus sectile frieze of scenes from Christ’s life. Another treasure for sure.
The whole church has an outstanding collection of mid to late 20th century Devon stained glass, owing to a Nazi bomb blowing out all the old windows. There is a grand variety and worth the visit alone.
Then there is the Lady Chapel, a beautiful contemplative space with fine stone work and splashes of colour from the stained glass in the lancet windows.
Topping this off with some goodly carved woodwork and the constant architectural delight, this is a really most excellent church.
